If you’re looking for a story that’s out of this world, pick up a copy of The 13th Floor: Primed For Adventure. Its tale of a journey to an alternate land will have your imagination blasting off to the stars and beyond!
Forty-one years ago, human beings stepped foot on the moon for the first time! This July 20th celebrate the anniversary of that momentous occasion by helping children connect with the wonders of outer space.
Use an old paper towel roll with a pointed paper cup attached to one end as the base for creating model rockets. Try creating UFO’s out of two paper plates glued together lip to lip – into the typical space craft shape – which the kids can then decorate. Make star and moon shaped nametags for each child or have them practice a slow motion moon walk to ignite their imaginations. Paper mache burned out light bulbs with a few layers of green tissue paper and then paint on big black teardrop shaped eyes and tiny dots for nostrils to create alien heads.
You can even have kids engage in a science experiment by making real rockets using clear film canisters, alka seltzer tabs, and water. This one is a bit messy so be sure you have access to an outside area when planning this activity. Simply fill the container half way with water, drop in a tab and quickly snap the lid on securely. As fast as you can, turn the vessel over and stand far back to watch your rocket fly!
