Have students write “International Literacy Day” at the top of the page.
Below that, have them list all of the words they can make from the letters in the heading. You can only use the letter multiple times if it shows up in the heading multiple times. For example any word you create may only have one “d” in it, but it could have up to three “n’s”.
Begin a pen pal relationship with an elderly person. Ask them to share their stories with you. Compare and contrast the way your life is now, with how it was for them when they were your age.
Share photos. Be faithful; try to exchange letters once a month, at least. At the end of a year, reflect on your relationship. Have you changed your idea about what it means to be an older person?
Have your English speaking student paired with another student who has English as a second language. Students can read aloud to each other, with the more capable reader providing pronunciation tips. While paired, expand the lessons to sharing information about family life, cultural differences, and the countries of origin. It can be a valuable way to break down racial barriers and support tolerance.
Have your students paired with a class of younger readers. Spend some time each week reading to each other. The more capable reader can assist the younger reader and provide valuable one on one time. The younger reader will have someone to look up to.
