Begin a pen pal relationship with an elderly person. Ask them to share their stories with you. Compare and contrast the way your life is now, with how it was for them when they were your age.
- How is school different?
- How about the expectations of society in general?
- How old were they when they left home?
- What career opportunities were there for them?
- What kind of extra curricular activities did they like as teens?
- What activities do they do now?
Share photos. Be faithful; try to exchange letters once a month, at least. At the end of a year, reflect on your relationship. Have you changed your idea about what it means to be an older person?
Have your English speaking student paired with another student who has English as a second language. Students can read aloud to each other, with the more capable reader providing pronunciation tips. While paired, expand the lessons to sharing information about family life, cultural differences, and the countries of origin. It can be a valuable way to break down racial barriers and support tolerance.
Have your students paired with a class of younger readers. Spend some time each week reading to each other. The more capable reader can assist the younger reader and provide valuable one on one time. The younger reader will have someone to look up to.
A World of Stories is a special story collection that was created by Gumboot Books to raise money for Rotary District 5020 literacy projects.
“A World of Stories” is a collection of stories celebrating a variety of international holidays that can be celebrated worldwide, regardless of religious or cultural background.
They are intended to be enjoyed with children 12 and under, but are also suitable for anyone learning to read and write English. Each story has a theme or message that relates in some way to the corresponding holiday, and each story is introduced with some information about the day being celebrated.
All participating authors and illustrators have donated their time and talents. Mouse over the holiday to find out more about the day, story, the author & the illustrator. The book is 112 pages, 11” x 8.5”, with full colour illustrations throughout and retails for the suggested price of $25.00.
Educational materials are now available on our website (with more added each week) to help teachers and parents facilitate discussion and lesson planning around the themes covered in the book.
We have created discussion guides for all our novels, which are also printed right in the back of our books – perfect for bookclubs or classroom discussions!
